Trump administration has invited congressional leaders to the White House on Wednesday for a briefing on border security.

While Washington remains at a stalemate over government fundingthe effect of the shutdown not just on the thousands of federal employees who have been forced to work without pay but also on the businesses and industries that rely on them have begun to show. Much of the nation returned to work after the holidays Wednesday, but some businesses are waiting on government loan approvals. Others, near federal buildings or national parks, are worried about losing their customer base. All Smithsonian museums, which had accommodated visitors since the shutdown began Dec. 22, are set to close Wednesday, too. A federal employee union has sued the Trump administration, claiming it is illegal for agencies to force employees to work without pay.
